Greyhounds flatten St. Paul in rout
NAUGTUCK, Oct. 8 – For the first time since joining the NVL, the Falcons were steamrolled in a 48-7 loss to host Naugtuck. Greyhound QB Erich Broadrick completed 12-of-17 passes for 243 yards and 3 TDs, including a 63-yard TD pass to Andrew Cirino on Naugatuck’s first offensive play.

“Honestly, I saw a lot of good things. I saw that we were in the right alignment on defense and were in the right position, we just didn’t execute well enough,” St. Paul coach Jude Kelly told the Bristol Press. “I saw a group of kids that wouldn’t quit. Our goal was to come here and improve. Sure, you want to win the game, but that’s not always the top priority. Believe it or not, I thought we got better tonight.”

Watertown express too much for Falcons
WATERTOWN, Oct. 1 – The Falcons simply couldn’t stop the host Indians in a 39-28 Naugatuck Valley League loss Friday night. “They made some stops and we didn’t,” St. Paul coach Jude Kelly told the Bristol Press. “We missed a lot of tackles and when you’re trying to play defense, and get better on defense, you have to tackle. It’s as simple as that.”

Watertown (3-0) rolled to 239 yards rushing in the first half led by QB Mark Quatrano with 173 yards and 2 TDs, including TD runs of 74 and 45 yards. In the first half, St. Paul made its living through the air as QB Tucker Bachand completed 12 passes for 254 yards and two TDs. The game was tied at halftime, 21-21.

In the second half, Watertown back Curtis Pomeroy (19-141) scored three of his four TDs to enable the Indians to pull ahead for good. Quatrano finished with 212 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Crusaders pull away from St. Paul
WATERBURY, Sept. 24 – Holy Cross’ Dave DiGiorgi scored 3 TDs including a 59-yard fumble return as the host Crusaders pulled away from St. Paul, 62-28 at Municipal Stadium. After the Falcons tied the game at 14-14 on a DeV’anti Gardner four-yard run in the second quarter, Holy Cross scored six of the next seven TDs in the game. Gardner was hurt in the second quarter and didn’t return to the game.

“Holy Cross is a good team, there’s no question about that,” Falcon coach Jude Kelly told the Bristol Press. “We have no excuses. They just outplayed and out-executed us. That’s all there is to it.” QB Tucker Bachand completed 17-of-34 passes for 222 yards a touchdown and two interceptions.

BRISTOL, Sept. 18 – Junior QB Tucker Bachand threw for 3 TD passes and Goodwin Tech transfer DeVanti Gardner scored two TDs to lead the Falcons to a 35-18 victory over Derby/O’Brien Tech in St. Paul’s first non co-op game in over a decade. Bachand completed 13-of-20 passes for 262 yareds while Gardner ran for 177 yards on 18 carries. “Our skill guys are improving all the time,” St. Paul coach Jude Kelly told the Bristol Press. “It’s a nice mix. CIAC rejects appeal, co-op now history
BRISTOL, June 1 -- An appeal to allow Goodwin Tech underclassmen, primarily nine juniors and seniors, to finish out their high school football with St. Paul has been rejected by the CIAC. "We are disappointed for them because it does not look like they will have a place to play,” St. Paul athletic director Dave Dennehy told the Bristol Press.

CIAC rules co-op with Goodwin Tech must be dissolved
BRISTOL, March 25, 2010 – St. Paul will go it alone in 2010. The CIAC has dissolved the co-op between St. Paul and Goodwin Tech because the Falcons have over 32 players in their program. St. Paul has 28 underclassmen expected to play next fall and an anticipated 10 freshmen put the Falcons over the limit.

“It used to be 37 players but last year the (CIAC cooperative) committee brought it down to 32,” St. Paul coach Jude Kelly  said. “But I really don’t think that they should count freshman because, in football, freshman just don’t play at the varsity level.” St. Paul athletic director David Dennehy said the school is applying to the CIAC for a co-op to allow the current Goodwin Tech sophomores and juniors in the program to finish out their scholastic careers with St. Paul.

The decision ends a 10-year co-op program between St. Paul and Goodwin Tech that began in 2000. Lewis Mills was a third partner from 2006-09 but will field its own team in 2010.
