Derby vote makes St. Paul admission to NVL official
DERBY, Dec. 23 – St. Paul’s admission to the Naugatuck Valley League was made official on Monday night when the Derby Board of Education voted, 7-0, to support Derby’s move into the NVL. St. Paul’s admission was contingent upon Derby because the NVL wanted two schools to join the league, not one. Both schools will join the NVL in the fall. St. Paul is slated to join the NVL’s Copper Division in football with Woodland Regional, Holy Cross, Naugatuck, Kennedy, Torrington and Sacred Heart.
Connecticut Post, Dec. 23: Derby votes to join NVL

St. Paul accepts invitation to join NVL
WATERBURY, Dec. 16 – St. Paul will be playing in the Naugatuck Valley League next fall, the Waterbury Republican American reported this morning. The Falcons and Derby were invited to play in the NVL beginning next fall. Derby’s Board of Education still has to approve the move but St. Paul has already accepted the application. St. Paul and Enfield reportedly had also applied to play in the Pequot Conference.

Seven Falcons named to All-Nutmeg team
BRISTOL, Dec. 9 – Six Falcons made the All-Nutmeg team for their performance this fall on the field for St. Paul. QB Brian Kaczynski, S Rob Cannata, LB Anthony Cerreta, WR Bryon Jones, WR Ryan Moore, RB Marcus Aiken and LB Kyle Supinski were all honored.

Kaczynski (QB) and Moore (WR) were named to the All-Courant offensive team for the 71 towns that the paper covers. Aiken (RB) received honorable mention honors.

Kaczynski leads Falcons to ninth win, ties record
MERIDEN, Nov. 26 – QB Brian Kaczynski threw 3 TD passes to tie a state record for most TD passes in a single season as the Falcons completed a stellar campaign with a 46-6 win over Wilcox Tech on Thanksgiving Eve at Falcon Field. Kaczynski threw all 3 TD passes to Ryan Moore (47, 9, 1) and has 36 TD passes on the season, tying him with Southington’s Dan Bruetsch who also threw 36 TDs in 2000.

The Falcons (9-2) finished with nine wins, the most since 1976 when they were 10-1. Running back Marcus Aiken rushed for 111 yards to finish with 1,097 yards rushing for the season. He also had a 66-yard interception return for a TD and 1 yard TD run to finish with 20 TDs.

St. Paul head coach Jude Kelly credited the nine seniors, the first class to go through the program with Kelly, for much of the team's succes. "Everything goes back to these seniors. They’re a very special group. They’ve just been fantastic," Kelly told the Bristol Press. "These kids have always done the right thing [both on and off the field]. That’s something that I’ve told them so many times since they got here as freshman; that if they do the right things they would ultimately be successful in the end. It’s nice to see that come true for them."

The following day, Crosby's David Gondek threw 4 TD passes in a 44-38 win over Kennedy to set a new single season TD record of 39.
Bristol Press, Nov. 27: Kaczynski ties state record in win over Wilcox Tech

Mature move by Kaczynski: Writer Roger Cleavland in the Republican American reported that Brian Kaczynski was initially upset that he didn't get a chance to break the state record for most TD passes in a season. But he praised the Goodwin Tech senior for taking the time to regain his composure before speaking with the media. St. Paul coach Jude Kelly defended not going for the record. “The game is bigger than any one of us individually,” Kelly told Cleavland. “To throw a pass later in the game when you are up several scores to try to break a record ... the bottom line is the game comes first.”
Waterbury Republican American, Nov. 27: After the game, Kaczynski OK with decision to not go for the record

Win by Avon eliminates Falcons from playoffs
STAFFORD, Nov. 21 – St. Paul’s flickering CIAC playoff hopes were extinguished Friday night when Avon (9-2) beat Stafford, 53-14 to clinch the fourth and final spot in the Class M playoffs. Avon joins defending Class M champion Ledyard, newly-crowned Southwest Conference champion Brookfield and Constitution State Conference champion Cheney Tech in the four-team field.

Ledyard win hurts Falcons playoff hopes
LEDYARD, Nov. 20 – St. Paul’s chances to qualify for the Class M tournament were dealt a huge blow on Thursday night when No. 3 Ledyard earned a convincing 27-6 win over No. 1 New London to clinch a spot in the Class M playoffs. The only way for St. Paul to qualify is for Avon (8-2) to lose to Stafford (2-8) on Friday night combined with a St. Paul victory over Wilcox Tech on Thanksgiving.

Records for Kaczynski
BRISTOL, Nov. 19 – It’s been a record-breaking season and career for Falcon QB Brian Kaczynski, who has thrown 50 TD passes in his high school career.
Bristol Press, Nov. 19: Record-breaking performances from Kaczynski

Moore, Aiken lift Falcons to win
BRISTOL, Nov. 16 – The Falcons remained alive for their first CIAC playoff berth since 1976 with a dominating 42-21 win over RHAM in their final Nutmeg League contest. The league will disband at the end of the year. Ryan Moore (3-127) scored 3 TDs for St. Paul (8-2, 6-2 Nutmeg) catching a pair of TD passes from Brian Kaczynski and scooping up a fumble and running 59 yards for the score. Kaczynski passed for 176 yards and 3 TDs.

Eight wins in a single season is the most since St. Paul went 10-0 in 1976, when they qualified for the Class M championship game

St. Paul must beat Wilcox Tech on Thanksgiving and get some help to qualify for the Class M playoffs. It is unlikely that Stafford (2-8) will beat Avon next Friday. The Falcons need New London to beat Ledyard because a win by the Colonials over the undefeated Whalers would give them a spot over St. Paul. Brookfield (8-1, 1140, 126), Cheney Tech (9-0, 1100, 122), Ledyard (7-2, 1010, 112) and Avon (8-2, 1100, 110) are currently ahead of St. Paul (8-2, 1010, 101).

If Ledyard loses to New London and beats Fitch on Thanksgiving and St. Paul beats Wilcox, the playoff spot could come down to bonus points – wins by teams that the teams beat earlier in the year.

Berlin defeat helps St. Paul's playoff chances
WEST HARTFORD, Nov. 15 – St. Paul’s chances for a CIAC playoff berth improved with Berlin’s 8-6 loss to Northwest Catholic on Saturday morning. The Falcons moved up to No. 5 in the Class M rankings with the top four earning playoff berths. St. Paul needs to win its final two games over RHAM and Wilcox Tech and hope that either Avon or Ledyard loses a game to allow St. Paul to move up.

Avon (7-2) faces Morgan Sunday and closes the regular season at Stafford while Ledyard (7-2) has games left with New London (9-0) and Fitch.

Falcons fall short in epic shootout with Berlin, 64-50
BERLIN, Nov. 7 – The Falcons could never quite catch Berlin Friday night in an epic shootout at Sage Park. Berlin and St. Paul combined for 114 points, the fifth highest amount of points in modern state high school history as Berlin outlasted the Falcons, 64-50 in a key Nutmeg Conference battle.

Berlin’s Max DeLorenzo turned in the second-highest rushing performance in school history, racing for 264 yards and 5 TDs on 27 carries. He had 151 yards and 3 TDs in the first quarter. His 5 TDs and 30 points tied a Berlin school record.

Berlin led 22-6 after one quarter but the Falcons rallied with a 10-yard run from Marcus Aiken and a pair of TD passes from Brian Kaczynski to cut the lead to two at halftime, 28-26. Kaczynski completed 19 of 30 passes for 334 yards and a co-op record 5 TD passes.

But Berlin scored four TDs in the third quarter on a pair of runs, a pass and a 40-yard interception return to open up a 52-34 lead. "It’s tough because you practice all week focusing on stopping their run and to not be able to do it right from the start is difficult," St. Paul coach Jude Kelly told The Bristol Press. Losing cornerback Rob Cannata to a knee injury and defensive lineman Anthony Cerreta during the game didn’t help. "It was a factor but all the credit has to go to Berlin. That’s a good football team," Kelly said. Kaczynski's 19 completions was a co-op record.
PLAYOFF HUNT: With the loss, St. Paul slipped to No. 6 in the CIAC’s Class M playoff rankings. The top four earn a spot in the playoffs. Avon (7-2) is ranked at No. 4 with an average of 106.67 with Berlin at No. 5 with an average of 105 points. St. Paul has an average of 97.78.

St. Paul needs to win its final two games and needs some help. They will need Avon to lose to either Morgan (3-5) or Stafford (1-7) and have No. 3 Ledyard (7-2, 107.78) fall to undefeated New London (8-0) or Fitch (1-7). Berlin (6-2) has games remaining with N.W. Catholic (6-2) and Windham (4-4) and another loss by Berlin would be helpful for the Falcons. St. Paul is looking for its first CIAC playoff berth since 1976.
